Entrevista: Mr. Martinez

Yarisel Morillo: Hola, soy Yari. Pertenezco a nuestro periódico hispanohablante www.lavozdeisa.com, el periódico de los mantarrayas.

Mr. Martinez: Buenos días Yari, un placer conocerte.

Yarisel Morillo: Muchos de los de “8” nos preguntamos si hablas otros idiomas o tienes herencia hispana, ¿es así?

Mr. Martinez: Mi familia es de Perú, yo nací en New Jersey. Hablo español e inglés.

Yarisel Morillo: ¡Qué interesante! También te queremos preguntar, ¿cuál fue tu razón para venir a esta Escuela?

Mr. Martinez: Estoy emocionado de estar aquí. He estado sirviendo en la comunidad de Palm Springs en Greenacres durante los últimos 4 años en John I. Leonard, por lo que tener la oportunidad de venir a esta escuela, que es una de nuestras escuelas de teatro, es especial. Es como viajar en una máquina del tiempo y retroceder antes de que los estudiantes llegaran a John I. Estoy muy emocionado de seguir sirviendo a esta rica comunidad que es tan diversa y realmente tiene estudiantes excepcionales.

Yarisel Morillo: ¡Eso es realmente genial! Mi siguiente pregunta es: ¿estás emocionado de conocer a los estudiantes de octavo grado y participar en nuestras actividades escolares?

Mr. Martinez: ¡Por supuesto! Es un privilegio conocer a muchos estudiantes, sé de ellos por su nombre, pero son muchos, así que no recuerdo todos los nombres, pero la verdad es que me han dado una cálida bienvenida y me siento muy contento aquí en Palm Springs Middle.

Yarisel Morillo: Siempre hacemos esto (risas). ¿Cuáles serían tus metas para lo que resta de este año. ¿Cómo las lograrías?

Mr. Martinez: Los objetivos son definitivamente continuar con el gran trabajo que se ha hecho aquí en Palm Springs Middle School, manteniendo lo el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes, pero también asegurándome de construir relaciones y creo que se trata de ser ese líder servidor que sale a asegurarse de que los maestros de mi equipo se sientan apoyados, pero también que los estudiantes lo sientan. Qué sepan que tienen a alguien a quien recurrir y que podrán lograr sus metas con mi apoyo.

Yarisel Morillo: Esto nos ayudaría mucho. ¿Podría darnos algunos datos interesantes sobre usted?

Mr. Martinez: ¡Por supuesto! Algunos datos son que me encanta viajar. Siempre estoy viajando. También me gusta el fútbol, que es el fútbol americano. Jugué en la escuela secundaria como defensa. Otro dato sería que me gusta crear un entorno acogedor para todos los estudiantes, ustedes saben que puse mucho trabajo en mi oficina para decorarla y crear un entorno amable.

Yarisel Morillo: ¿Tiene alguna actividad divertida para la escuela?

Mr. Martinez: Bueno, ya hay algunas actividades emocionantes como el baile de graduación y la el «field trip» of Grandaventure, pero definitivamente tengo algunas cosas bajo la manga como el viernes divertido que comenzamos la semana pasada, y quiero continuar con ellos, pero comenzar a implementar diferentes incentivos como tarjetas de regalo, tal vez una aventura de graduación gratis o boletos para el baile para los estudiantes que exhiban orgullo sería interesante.

Yarisel Morillo: Eso será muy bueno, sé que no han estado en esta escuela por mucho tiempo, pero ¿qué piensas de los estudiantes, los maestros y tu equipo?

Mr. Martinez: Como dije, me siento súper bienvenido aquí en Palm Springs, los estudiantes han sido muy acogedores y receptivos, al igual que los maestros y el personal.

Yarisel Morillo: Morillo: Gracias, ¿hay algo que te gustaría cambiar en la Escuela? Por ejemplo, ¿el comportamiento de los estudiantes?

Mr. Martinez: No vengo con la misión de cambiar nada, creo que el trabajo que se está haciendo en Palm Springs es un gran trabajo. Vengo con una visión que es continuar logrando lo que se ha propuesto aquí en Palm Springs y, obviamente, con el tiempo, se irán haciendo cosas nuevas y vividas según sea necesario, pero por ahora solo estoy aprovechando la oportunidad.

Mr. Martinez: Good morning Yari, nice to meet you.

Yarisel Morillo: Many of us at “8” wonder if you speak other languages or have Hispanic heritage. Is that correct?

Mr. Martinez: My family is from Peru; I was born in New Jersey. I speak Spanish and English.

Yarisel Morillo: How interesting! We also want to ask you, what was your reason for coming to this school?

Mr. Martinez: I’m excited to be here. I’ve been serving the Palm Springs community at Greenacres for the past four years at John I. Leonard, so having the opportunity to come to this school, which is one of our theater schools, is special. It’s like traveling in a time machine and going back to before the students arrived at John I. I’m very excited to continue serving this rich community that is so diverse and truly has exceptional students.

Yarisel Morillo: That’s really great! My next question is: Are you excited to meet the eighth-grade students and participate in our school activities?

Mr. Martinez: Of course! It’s a privilege to meet so many students. I know them by name, but there are many, so I don’t remember all of them, but the truth is that they have given me a warm welcome and I feel very happy here at Palm Springs Middle.

Yarisel Morillo: We always do this (laughs). What would be your goals for the rest of this year? How would you achieve them?

Mr. Martinez: The goals are definitely to continue the great work that’s been done here at Palm Springs Middle School, maintaining student academic achievement, but also making sure to build relationships. I think it’s about being that servant leader who goes out to make sure the teachers on my team feel supported, but also that the students feel supported. Let them know they have someone to turn to and that they can achieve their goals with my support.

Yarisel Morillo: This would help us a lot. Could you give us some interesting facts about yourself?

Mr. Martinez: Of course! Some facts are that I love to travel. I’m always traveling. I also like soccer, which is football. I played defensive back in high school. Another thing would be that I like to create a welcoming environment for all students. You know I put a lot of work into my office to decorate it and create a friendly environment.

Yarisel Morillo: Do you have any fun activities for school?

Mr. Martinez: Well, there are already some exciting activities like prom and the Grandaventure field trip, but I definitely have some things up my sleeve like the Fun Friday we started last week, and I want to continue those. Starting to implement different incentives like gift cards, maybe a free prom adventure, or prom tickets for students who show pride would be interesting.

Yarisel Morillo: That would be great. I know you haven’t been at this school long, but what do you think of the students, teachers, and your team?

Mr. Martinez: Like I said, I feel super welcome here at Palm Springs. The students have been very welcoming and receptive, as have the teachers and staff.

Yarisel Morillo: Thank you. Is there anything you would like to change at the school? For example, student behavior?

Mr. Martinez: I’m not here with a mission to change anything. I think the work being done at Palm Springs is great. I come with a vision of continuing to accomplish what has been proposed here in Palm Springs, and obviously, over time, new and improved things will be done as needed, but for now, I’m just taking advantage of the opportunity.
